Corning

High-index glass wafers for AR waveguides

SMART GLASSES

Where it fits in smart glasses

Ultra-flat high-index glass wafers for AR/MR diffractive waveguides: 1.8/1.9/2.0 compositions in 150-300 mm wafers (Corning release, Jan 2022); FY2025 10-K lists glass wafers for augmented reality.

What the evidence establishes

Upstream enabler

Upstream enabler: Corning’s FY2025 10-K lists glass wafers for augmented reality, and a Jan 2022 Corning release gives the 1.8-2.0 index compositions.

Materials, substrates, equipment or foundry capacity behind glasses components. This is not a component supplier or an established smart-glasses revenue stream.

How we knowDisclosed The company’s own filing, release, annual report, product page or investor record describes the smart-glasses role. Where customers are unnamed, the listing says so.

Keep in perspective

No named glasses customer; glass wafers are a small line within a diversified materials company.

Diversified business exposure. This describes the breadth or role of the business; it is not an investment rating. A smart-glasses product, design-in or partnership does not by itself establish material glasses revenue, market share, or future returns.

Connections to the assembly

These links explain the technology relationship. The model is illustrative and does not represent an actual manufacturer’s bill of materials.

High-index waveguide plate

Light bounces along the plate by total internal reflection. A higher index allows a wider field of view: optical glass is about 1.8-2.0, silicon carbide about 2.6-2.7.

Scope of the company links: Upstream wafer suppliers that market high-index glass, polymer or SiC for AR waveguides. SICC reports initial AR/VR use with unnamed optics customers, still in customer validation; none names a shipping glasses program. The reflective waveguide glass in Meta Ray-Ban Display is reportedly SCHOTT’s (private).

AI SERVER RACK

Where it fits in an AI server rack

NVIDIA and Corning announced a multiyear partnership (May 6, 2026) under which Corning will raise US optical-connectivity capacity 10x and fiber capacity by more than 50% with three new plants in North Carolina and Texas; NVIDIA bought warrants for $500 million. Corning’s FY2025 10-K says it developed new fibers, cables and connectors for generative-AI demand (SMF-28e Contour fiber, Edge8 cabling), and NVIDIA lists it in its CPO ecosystem.

What the evidence establishes

AI-rack evidence

Disclosed: Corning’s 8-K files the NVIDIA partnership release and the $500 million warrant sale; its FY2025 10-K describes the generative-AI data-center products.

An explicit AI-server or AI-rack product, design-in, supply role, program, reference design or partnership, such as a part named for rack-scale AI systems or a product sold for AI data centers. For a rack builder, it means the company’s own AI servers or racks. This does not establish revenue, market share, volumes or future sourcing.

No purchase volumes or prices are disclosed, and the new plants are not yet built. Optical Communications was 38% of 2025 segment sales and also serves telecom carriers.

Fiber & cabling

High-density optical fiber cables and multi-fiber connectors that carry the light from the rack to the cluster’s switches.

Scope of the company links: Fiber cable, MPO/MMC connectivity and patching from the rack to the network. Corning will raise US optical-connectivity capacity 10x under its May 2026 NVIDIA partnership; Fujikura’s AFL says an NVL72 rack can be fed with up to 1,152 fibers and sells ultra-high-fiber-count cable; Furukawa’s Lightera mass-produces a 13,824-count cable for AI hyperscale data centers; Sumitomo Electric markets a 6,912-fiber cable and high-density connectors; Browave, a Taiwanese passive-optics maker, is in NVIDIA’s CPO ecosystem. SENKO, also named by NVIDIA, is private. The SDM4 multicore-fiber MSA (AFL, Corning, Sumitomo Electric, TeraHop) is a specification, not a product. Other listed cable and connector makers were not verified for AI fiber in our September 2026 review. Amphenol added fiber connectivity with the CommScope connectivity and cable business it bought (closed Jan 9, 2026), and BizLink sells fiber cassettes.
