MicroLED microdisplays: why the leader is private

See why self-emitting microLED panels suit slim display glasses, why most shipping units are green only, and why the leading maker has no listed shares.

Liquid crystal on a CMOS backplane modulates each pixel’s polarization. Teardowns identify an OmniVision LCoS panel in Meta Ray-Ban Display; OmniVision’s catalog OP03011 is 648 × 648 pixels at 3.8 µm with a MIPI-DSI input.

Why does microLED suit glasses?

Each microLED pixel emits its own light, so the engine needs no separate illumination or beam splitter and can be very small. Most shipping units show a single color: Even Realities G1 uses 640 × 480 green-only microLEDs from JBD. Green gives the most visible brightness for the power, and red microLED pixels lose efficiency as they shrink, which is one reason full color arrived later.

Is there a listed microLED pure play?

Not in this universe. JBD, whose microLEDs appear in Even Realities G1 and RayNeo X3 Pro, is private. Kopin says it is developing microLED alongside its OLED, LCD and FLCoS microdisplays. Magic Leap describes a glasses prototype that pairs its waveguides with Google’s Raxium microLED light engine; Raxium is not separately listed. Sony, BOE and SeeYA make micro-OLED, a different self-emitting technology, so they are not microLED makers.

How do microLED glasses show full color?

One approach combines three single-color panels. JBD’s Hummingbird II projector merges red, green and blue 0.1-inch panels through an X-cube prism in about 0.2 cc. In RayNeo X3 Pro, JBD’s release pairs its microLED displays with a single-layer etched waveguide credited to Applied Materials. Full color adds a combiner and alignment steps, so monochrome and full-color engines are different products, even from the same maker.

How to research microLED exposure

  1. Check the panel type in the device maker’s own specifications; press coverage sometimes mixes up microLED and micro-OLED.
  2. Separate the panel maker, the light-engine maker and the waveguide maker; a full-color engine combines all three.
  3. When the leader is private, name listed companies nearby only with the relationship spelled out: customer, partner, licensee or investor. An investor stake is not a product role.
  4. Distinguish development from production. A planned line, a prototype or a demo is not a shipping panel.
  5. Use the list as a starting point: it is curated, not exhaustive, and the model is illustrative, not a bill of materials.
